Here is the text I just recently wrote that should explain my idea:
I was exhausted, naked, and out of food. There was no where for me to go. As I stumbled through the woods, sure that I would meet my end, I came to the forefront of a vine-entangled palisade wall. The wall towered over me, imposing and powerful. I collapsed to my knees, crashing against the wall as I fell. As I blacked out, I could hear screams and shouts from atop the wall, the powerful, yet calm voices of the other sex drawing me closer to sleep.
When I awoke, I found myself tied to a bed inside a tent. I looked around, noticing the dimly flickering candle light and the pleasant aromas of a meal on the spit. I blinked, trying to clear the blurriness of my vision.
I found the strange image of a scantily-clad woman standing over me, a knife in her left hand. I tried to squirm, to crawl away in fear, but the bindings held me.
"Welcome, to our paradise." The figure spoke, her voice so pristine to my ear that I would've married her right then. "This, well, this is our home. Here, our group has lived in peace for years. We welcome you for now, but you must leave soon. We do not allow males to stay more than a week in our tents."
I blinked again and nodded, fearful of what that well-constructed blade could do to me. "Of...of course."
"Good!" The woman responded, the cheerful voice still piercing into the deepest confines of my brain. "Now, I'll untie you and we can get you something to eat. We forced a little bit of water into your throat while you were asleep, but I bet you're so hungry!"
------------------------------------------------------------------------
The guy in the story got shipwrecked and was the only survivor of a shark attack that took place as the boat wreckage was drifting to land. So pretty much. Amazonians?
I was thinking, a tribe of all women that lived on a small forest island off the coast. Their occupations range from huntress to bard, entertainer to council woman, but they all refuse to leave the island. They have a primitive-looking set of architecture, all built from wood and what ever else the forest can provide them.
Their huntresses would be incredibly skilled in archery, having to provide for a whole tribe. Yet, the tribe never really grows in population. Their only reproduction comes when there is a male visitor, or when the 'Generational Male' is born.
They would have a religion based on the concept of a single father who watches over them all. Their would only be one 'Generational Male' per generation (duh) and once the current male died, the next oldest would take his place. If another male was born in the generation, a second, he would be killed in infancy. However, a lot of the secondaries get shipped off to the mainland by mothers who refuse to give in to their duties and instead pick maternal instinct.
That sound applicable?

Yep, I think something like that could have mileage!
There was a suggestion for a mesogea equivalent of the Aegean - an archipelago with many strange and fantastical inhabitants. Think of the Homeric poems - Jason or Odysseus encountering unusual tribes and creatures amongst the isles. A tribe of Amazons would certainly fit this idea.
I presume the Amazons would still want excellent genetic examples for the next generation, so wouldn't want to restrict it to only one male. Perhaps combine this with Sirens - comely wenches that lure lonely sailors to their isle - and eventual doom!

Lol yes, that is kind of where I got the idea. But no, they want only the pure male to bear their next 'Generational Male'. However, sometimes that fails them and they only get females, which is where the strangers come in.
Not to mention, some women just want...well...you know what I am getting at xP

Sounds like a very good storyline. The whole premis of the Amazons was a sect of a religion, I think Sappho was a member, anyway the mystique surrounding it was pretty much enlarged by the male oriented society (a bit like that sad old twit of a Roman, cant remember his name at the moment who gate crashed a female festival dressed as a woman hoping to spot a bit of hows yer mother going on. What he got was an early version of Anne Sommers with women getting drunk and gossiping, having a laugh and a joke, then catching the idiot!).
The island wasnt Lesvos, It was something other, but basically a part of a cult. What it really was so far as debate is concerned was a place for fathers and brothers to put troublesome daughters and wives who were embarrasing. It wasnt somewhere that the women were clamouring to get to and there were men there anyway, priests who were having a right old time of it I can bet.
It would be a good part of the system to have a sect or relgious following with these kind of banishments, women doing their level best to get out of the place (a prison in all but name.) There could be plenty of plot.!
